Responsible Tourism - Kicking Horse

Ski Safari asked Kicking Horse resort management how they limit the resort's environmental impact e.g. usage of renewable energy sources, waste management and recycling programmes etc....

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort embraces the importance of protecting and preserving the environment and our natural resources.  Being situated in the spectacular Columbia Valley and surrounded by five National Parks our greatest asset is our natural environment.

To ensure Kicking Horse Mountain Resort’s natural splendor not only remains intact but thrives for future generations, we are committed to improving our environmental practices as we strive towards sustainability.  As a growing four seasons mountain resort, we are aware of our environmental impact to the local flora and fauna and are constantly adapting to control our ecological footprint.

Some projects currently underway at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort include:

  • Water conservation through the use of water free urinals and composting toilets
  • Innovative food preparation to reduce packaging
  • Researching the possibility of utilizing alternative fuels in our heavy machinery
  • Researching alternative energy supplies for remote locations
  • Replacement of older 2-stroke snowmobiles with new more fuel efficient 4 stroke motors
  • A commitment to minimize our impacts during summer slope grooming
  • Extensive slope restoration to regenerate any disturbed areas
  • Erosion control
  • On mountain staff clean up days
  • Encouraging staff to carpool, recycle, reduce, and make “green” business decisions while planning for the future
