Non-ski activities

There's a large number of great non-ski activities that are available at Jackson Hole during the winter time - indeed far more than you could accomplish in just one visit.  So, either pick and choose carefully, or start planning your next Jackson Hole ski holiday!

Snowmobiling in Yellowstone National Park

Piloting your own snow machine along the snow covered roads in Yellowstone is one of the world’s most memorable winter activities.  Summer visitors to Yellowstone do not realize what they are missing.  Winter adventurers get to see the real Yellowstone, much like John Colter, the first white man to witness Yellowstone’s splendor, did during the winter of 1807.  You will have the opportunity to see moose, bison, elk, deer, coyote, wolves and a whole array of different geo-thermal features, including the world famous Old Faithful geyser.

Sample snowmobiling trips:

Granite Hot Springs:  30 miles roundtrip
Your snowmobile guides will provide transportation to the Granite Canyon trailhead, located 24 miles south of Jackson.  Tour through 11 beautiful miles of the Bridger-Teton National Forest to the hot springs.  Take a relaxing soak in the 105 degree springs or explore the open country.  Don’t forget to bring your towel, sunglasses and swimsuit.

Gros Ventre Mountain Range:  50 miles roundtrip
Just north of Jackson, the Gros Ventre is one of the best spots for viewing the area’s spectacular scenery and wildlife.  Bighorn sheep, elk, moose, deer, and coyotes make their homes here.  Guides will narrate your journey.

The Greys River:  70 miles roundtrip
Just 45 scenic miles from Jackson, the Greys River is a spectacular and remote area offering endless meadows and bowls of untracked powder and abundant wildlife viewing.

Dog Sled Tours

If you have never been on a dog sled before, you are missing out on one of the most breathtaking ways to appreciate nature in winter time.  You can gaze out at the majestic Teton Peaks as a team of Alaskan Huskies whisk you through untouched snowfields, and beautiful forests.

Horse Drawn Sleigh Rides through the National Elk Refuge

Yellowstone is not the only place to see a lot of wildlife in Jackson Hole.  Located just north of the town of Jackson, the National Elk Refuge is home to coyotes, bison, wolves, and over 7,000 elk each winter.  Horse drawn sleigh tours through the refuge are offered every day from the Visitor’s Center in town.  If you don’t have enough time for a full day of snowmobiling in the parks, definitely take advantage of this opportunity to get up close and personal with the wildlife of Jackson Hole.

National Museum of Wildlife Art

The National Museum of Wildlife Art is home to the nation’s premier public collection of fine art devoted to wildlife.

Snow Tubing & Night Skiing

If you don’t get enough excitement on the slopes during the day (if that is possible), Snow King Resort lights up the night for skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing.

Jackson Hole Moose Hockey

If you are looking for a unique nighttime activity, head on down to Snow King Resort to watch a Jackson Hole Moose Hockey Game.  The atmosphere is always electric as the Moose showdown against hockey teams from across the country.  You can check out their entire schedule online (www.jacksonholemoose.com) to see if they are in town during your stay.

Gallery Walks

Jackson Hole is home to over two dozen galleries that host a variety of exhibits.  From Native American Art to modern art and photography, there is a gallery to suit every visitor’s palate.  Be sure to visit Jackson’s brand new, state of the art Center for the Arts.  Guided and self guided gallery walks are available.
